Education Support in Project Villages
DORS is continuing to assist children from the poorest families in our project villages to attend school. This month, at the start of the school year, we paid the school fees of 122 children in 7 villages in Hanyuan County. The total cost was 24,660 RMB or £2000. In addition to the children supported last year, this semester we have included the three villages of Juetuo, Shashu and Moduo, where new projects have recently begun. Over two-thirds of those supported are girls.
'Girls' School' in Banyang Hamlet 5
The school in Banyang no. 5 hamlet was described in our June Newsletter. Last semester 7 second year primary school children were supported by DORS at the school. This year there are two classes - a third year and a new first year class of 9 children. As Banyang Village hamlets 4 and 5 are particularly poor and remote, DORS is continuing to assist with school fees for all the students. Unusually, all of these 16 children are girls. There are no boys at all in the 20 families of these two hamlets.
Harvest in Hanyuan
As the summer draws to a close in Hanyuan, the farmers here are busy harvesting their staple food crops. The rice has already been harvested from the paddy fields on the flat plains in the valley bottoms. On the steeper slopes, the maize is being cut and the cobs hung to dry from the house eaves. The potato crop is also being harvested by hand and carried home in huge back baskets.
